The event will begin at 9am with a 5K Walk led by Mayor Ruben Pineda at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 155 Prince Crossing Road, West Chicago. Then join us for a free healthy brunch and stay for cooking demos, health screenings, a blood drive*, a scavenger hunt and prizes!

American Heart Association volunteer Mayor Ruben Pineda, in partnership with District 33 Administration and others, helped lead the funding and installation of automatic water filling stations throughout each of the elementary schools and Leman Middle school in West Chicago’s District 33. For the students, making the healthy choice will now be the easier choice. #OneSmallChange

Walk #3 will be on Feb. 5th and is sponsored by The Western DuPage Chamber of Commerce, Real Life Church, and Real Life Church Young Life. Walk #4 will be on March 12th and is sponsored by St. Andrew Lutheran Church and CNM Care.

Healthy West Chicago and Mayor Ruben Pineda joined the American Heart Association at their Midwest Affiliate Integration Meeting. The efforts led by Healthy West Chicago within our community were shared with the AHA Leadership Team. Liz Andrews, AHA’s Senior Vice President of Health Strategies honored Mayor Pineda with the “Hero’s Award” - for championing health, and making health a priority for the residents of West Chicago.

Dec. 11, 2016 October 1, 2016 Free Community Indoor Walk #1

Healthy West Chicago teamed with Team Pineda and WC Community High School to gather at the field house for an hour of walking together. Sunday 12/11/16 from 9:00-10:00 am. The first of four walks was sponsored by Breaking Free’s DREAM School District 33 After School Program . Over 15 families, and over 45 walkers of all ages, joined together for the walk. Students from the after school program incorporate physical activity into their daily program and were encouraged to bring their families to participate.   Read more...

Dec. 3, 2016 Frosty Fest

Main Street West Chicago felt like Santa’s Village during 2016 Frost Fest! Healthy West Chicago activated the street with “reindeer games” that encourage physical activity. Guests tried their luck at a reindeer bucket toss, a candy cane toss, bean bag tic-tac-toe and danced to holiday tunes. The games were stationed right next to live reindeer who pulled the sleigh full of Mayor Ruben Pineda and this year’s essay contest winners.

October 5, 2016 October 5, 2016 HWC Receives Grant for Cooking Classes

Northwestern Medicine has awarded funds to HWC for Cooking Classes! HWC is teaming with Common Threads and West Chicago Park District's after school program this winter/spring 2017 to offer healthy cooking and grocery shopping programs. "Small Bites" will focus on youth preparing healthy after school snacks, and "Cooking Skills and World Cuisine" teaches youth global exploration through healthy meal preparation.  Learn more...

Sept. 21, 2016 World Heart Day Celebration at Pioneer Park

In partnership with the National Forum for Stroke Prevention, the City of West Chicago, HWC cohosted a party to celebrate the City’s 500+ walkers who came out four consecutive Saturday’s during the month of September. In honor of this international event the
“In This – Together” mural was lit with red lights.

HWC teamed up with the WeGo Together Community Market at Leman Middle School to teach families how much sugar is in their favorite beverages. 76 Brita water filter pitchers were handed out for free to encourage people to drink more water.

September 1-20, 2016 September 1-20, 2016 School District 33 Lunch Visits

Mayor Pineda and HWC visited all seven School District 33 schools to personally welcome students back to school, and invite them to come walk at the Move with the Mayor Challenge walks each Saturday.

Last of the four walks brought out 68 kids and 76 adults who all met up in front of Turtle Splash. The walk threaded through West Chicago’s historic neighborhood. Indian Knoll, Turner and Wegner Schools were all represented.


Sept. 17/18, 2016 Sept. 17/18, 2016 Mexican Independence Day Celebration

HWC sponsored the soccer “family-style” street tournament, and spent the day celebrating West Chicago’s Mexican heritage at the street fair. Each school walked in the one-mile long parade.

Sept. 17, 2016 Move with the Mayor Walk #3

35 kids and 45 adults all gathered in front of HWC’s office and did some yoga with the infamous Lorax. The 1.5 mile route passed the High School where walkers were greeted by the school’s mascot the Wildcat! Town looked festive with the colorful Mexican banners draping the walking corridor.

Rain could not stop this group from Movin’ with Mayor Pineda! Over 130 walkers united at Currier Elementary, Pioneer Elementary School and Leman Middle School. Each walk is started with a group yoga session to stretch before the walk.

Over 230 walkers of all ages joined for the 1.5 mile community walk starting at Gary Elementary School. Participant schools included Gary, the Early Learning Center, Trinity Preschool and Project Hope. Penny Waddle the preschool mascot greeted everyone, along with firetrucks and police cars.

Parents and students gathered at Reed-Keppler Park for prizes, music and fun! HWC passed out water bottles and shared information about sugary sweetened beverages, and served alternative infused water.

Beautiful weather and a gregarious crowd made the Railroad Days parade a success. HWC passed out crushed fruit snack packs instead of candy. And Mayor Pineda walked the route two times! When he finished the first time, he came back to finish the parade by walking with HWC!

The Railroad Days moved to Pioneer Park this year – and break-out Zumba sessions were led by HWC’s guest Zumba instructor Michelle Grant. Patrons were encouraged to get up and move between musical acts.

100s of walkers and runners came out to remember fallen Officer Michael Browning. The 5K race started at Reed-Keppler Park and traversed the Illinois Prairie Path, over a scenic bridge and through a pristine prairie.

An array of community gardeners and garden supporters gathered to discuss visions for a future community garden initiative.

HWC joined other community partners for a night of fun and prizes. Parents and their students engaged in conversation about how to reduce sugary drinks and stay active using the 5-4-3-2-1 Go! Messaging.

HWC provided fruit infused water for the Mayor’s Annual State of the city address. Not only was this a healthy alternative to sugary beverages, but it allowed more of the budget to be spent on healthy appetizers.

High school students rallied all day long to walk consecutively and raise money for cancer research. HWC joined the “student government team.”

A perfect day was had by the community at Bloomingfest. HWC shared a sugary beverage lesson where visitors learned that up to 17 teaspoons of sugar are in leading brands of soda. Metal HWC water bottles were disseminated to families who completed the lesson.
